Falling into the Gopher Hole

The Accurate Machining Reapers had to dig themselves out of a gopher hole this past Saturday playing their first ever league game. The Reapers fell behind early due to the strong forward play of the Saskatoon Gophers. The Gophers scored first and dominated in the set plays most notable in the scrums during the first half.

“We only get one chance at this boys’”, Coach and Team Captain Shaine Wald made it clear that he wanted the team to make their mark felt on the SRU during their first game.

The Reapers responded with a try from the backs to move ahead 7 – 5 just before half. The Reapers were grateful to get the score but it came at the heads of losing tight head prop Dean Campbell to a head and neck injury. The first half also had a fair share of high tackles and a vicious late hit on Shane Wald that prevented the Reapers from adding onto the score.

The second half the Reapers were able to sort out the scrums after some shuffling around in the pack which opened way for new speedy hooker Brandon (he's from Nova Scotia, I repeat, he's not a Newfie! He gets touchy on the subject) and new second row, Marcus. Both players played hard during the second half and helped to stable out the scrum to produce ball for the backs. In the Backs Jamie and Graham also saw action for the first time this year and look to compete for spots on the starting roster.

The Reapers scored twice early in the second half to take control of the game, including a football like return from Number 8 Steve which eventually ended up in the hands of flanker\hooker James for the score. The Gophers were relentless and scored off a five meter scrum late to make things interesting.

The Reapers were able to pull off the victory and will play at home next weekend June 10th at 2:00 pm at ES Laird School. Admission is free.
