lisa It was a great day for a rugby game this last weekend.  Sun was out , slight wind and there was actually enough grass on the field to soften the blow when going to ground.  While the Reapers Men’s game was cancelled in Saskatoon, the Women Reapers played the St. Albert Saints and E.S. Laird.

The St. Albert Team was a younger team that seemed to have speed well spread out their depth chart.  The Lady Reapers used their forward pack to dictate play.  Strong running by Lisa Griffin playing Tight head gave the Saints trouble all day.  Lisa ran with ease and knocking down anyone how did get in her way.  Only the few brave souls willing to grab on a leg and wait for teammate to come help could slow her down.  To top off her play she was even taking kicking responsibility for the restarts which is amazing for a forward to do. I was once told by a Old boy who had seen a lot of rugby in his day, “Forwards  only kick other forwards”.

Rookie’s  Justyne Boisson  had a particular strong game running the ball well and tackling well in open play.  There was some doubt that she would see the field after twisting her ankle at practice.  Her ankle seemed to hold up well though and gave the crowd some good photo ops. Tara Luchynski also ran the ball well at full back scoring her first try of the ever.

There was lots of scoring in the game,  36 – 32 was the Final Score in favor of the Saints.  The Lady Reapers went up a few to start take the lead into half time, but the Saints scored twice early on in the second  half which stole the momentum away from the reapers.  From watching the game it seemed to be kicking that broke the back of the reapers both defensively and offensively.  The Saints pounded the ball down the field and made good on their opportunities when they  presented itself and the Reapers had a hard time to clear the lines when pressure was on.  Luckily time and finesse can cure both of these ailments.

Next Rugby Game is 3:00 August 30th Men and Women play the Oats
